Our grand total for our “Hearts For Haiti” campaign was $3713.41!! We had collected approximately $2500 until Wednesday Feb. 10th and then received an astonishing $1213 for our PJ day on Thursday. Please give yourselves and your children a pat on the back for a job well done! Together, we have made a huge difference! Mrs. Cowan delivered a cheque on our behalf to the Canadian Red Cross organization this afternoon.

A reminder to our grade two parents of the parent information night at RHS on Tuesday, Feb. 16th. This meeting will provide you with information on the new grade three immersion program and the English Prime Program offered in September 2010. If you are unable to attend Tuesday evening the same meeting is being held on Monday, Feb. 15th at the same time and place for parents of LES and QES.

Thank you very much for our wonderful treatment during Staff Appreciation Week! We were spoiled with daily morning snacks and Red Whale coffee , a delicious luncheon on Thursday, and lovely gifts for everyone. Your contribution of food and gifts was appreciated by all! Again, you exceeded our expectations.

Have a great weekend!!

February 10th

At the suggestion of a few parents, our final event for Hearts For Haiti will be a pajama day tomorrow. All students (and staff) are encouraged to wear their pajamas and bring a toonie for Haiti. We understand that many of you have already made significant donations, so please do not feel obligated to send the toonie. All students are encouraged to wear their pjs.

On Friday, all students are asked to come dressed in red, white or pink to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Have a great day!

 February 9th

Our Mabel’s Labels Fundraising brochure and letter should have arrived home yesterday or will be coming today with your child.  Please take the time to read through the letter about this wonderful product.  I was pleased to see our Home and School group select Mabel’s Labels as a fundraiser. As a parent, I endorse the product completely. I purchased my first set just before school started in September and am pleased to say that we have very few missing items. At times, containers or mittens do not come home the same day they were sent to school, but they eventually make it home thanks to Mabel’s Labels. I have them on lunchbags, bookbags, footwear, clothing and hockey equipment! They are definitely well worth the money spent!!

We have three days remaining of our Hearts For Haiti campaign. To date, thanks to your tremendous generosity we have raised just over $2500!! At this point, our lofty goal of $3000 seems within reach!

Tomorrow our grade five students will be bringing home their registration forms for middle school (on bright orange paper). Please select your program of choice and return to the school no later than Wednesday, Feb. 24th.

Our Green School Initiative is expanding quickly. Children and teachers alike are making green choices and becoming environmentally responsible. Lights and SMART Boards are being turned off when children are out of the classroom. People are being very creative and reusing everyday items. Just recently our Olympic Research team used pizza boxes to make Inuksuks. This Friday, Feb. 12th we are planning another litterless lunch day. Please try to send your son or daughter to school with a lunch without garbage. We will continue to offer this challenge once a month this school year with the hope of expanding it next year.

February 4th

I trust you enjoyed receiving our February newsletter electronically. We had requested interested students to submit their names on a piece of recycled paper  to have a chance to win a book. If your child has not yet done so and would like to, please ensure they bring their entry to the office tomorrow morning following announcements. The draws will be made before morning recess. We are very close to achieving our Green School status with our 100 projects/ environmentally friendly acts almost achieved. We will continue with this initiative with the hope of achieving Jade School status by the end of the year. Jade status is 250 documented projects/ behaviours.

Thank you for your generous support for our Revved About Reading Program. Tomorrow is the last day to bring in your sponsor money and your book selections.

We have had tremendous support with our Hearts for Haiti campaign. To date, students and families have donated about $2000 for this worthwhile cause.  Please check our bulletin board in the main lobby. Donations will continue to be accepted until Friday, Feb. 12th.

We appreciate your support in ensuring that our children are coming to school dressed for the weather. It certainly has been cold the past week and a half and the majority of students are arriving with the coats, snowpants, boots, hats and mittens.  We do live in NB and the children will be going outside for fresh air and exercise unless it is colder than -18 (including the windchill). Still with the weather, please remember not to leave your car running if you are coming to the school for a short time.

Have a great evening!!

 January 14th - Message

Please remember that tomorrow is Litterless Lunch Day. Students should bring reusable snack and lunch containers and reusable drink containers. We are aiming to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the garbage at recess and at lunch.

If you have not yet sent back your Early School Closure information sheets, please do so tomorrow. Also, please send back your green form that came home today regarding Family Literacy Day and Electronic Receipt of Talk Mail Messages.

January 12 Message

To extend our composting and recycling program we are challenging the students to bring a Litterless Lunch on Friday, Jan. 15th.  We have included environmental messages on our morning announcements and this morning provided tips for creating litterless lunches. We have suggested using reusable containers for snacks and lunch items,  reusable drink containers, and stainless steel forks and spoons,  and reusable lunch boxes. I realize this can be challenging for parents, especially for those of you who have children like my own who have a tendency to forget items at school.  It is though, a worthwhile challenge for all of us. Our goal is to work toward becoming a litterless school. It will take time, effort, and a mind shift for many of us but currently research shows that one Canadian school aged child using a disposable lunch generates approximately 30 kilograms of waste per school year.

We are also looking to reduce the amount of paper we use. Starting in February we would like to send our Newsletters electronically for those who have access to email. I have attached our January newsletter to this message. Tomorrow we will send home a hard copy survey asking parents the following three questions:

1)      Have you been receiving our Talkmail messages via email?

2)      Do you have an email address but are not currently receiving our messages?

3)      Do you not have an email address and thus will need a hardcopy of our newsletters?

Please return these surveys as soon as possible. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Finally, our newsletters and Talkmail messages for the rest of the year will be posted on our school website.

Thank you and have a great afternoon!
